Dog Training 101 : Training Your Dog for the Home

Training your dog can be a time consuming, tedious process. Consistency and patience are required in order to teach your puppy or adult dog what is permitted and what is not in your home. The sooner you begin home dog training, the better off both you and your dog will be.

Here are some tips based on common problems to help you with effective training.

Training Your Dog for the Home

Housebreaking can be difficult. Crate training can expedite the process, as dogs will not usually soil their sleeping area. Never shout at your puppy or hit him, as this will not solve the problem. Taking your dog outside numerous times daily without crate training will also be ineffective, because your dog will not understand what he or she is supposed to do.

Puppies will chew anything they can find. Be sure to keep a close eye on your puppy when he is out of the crate. When you catch him chewing on a forbidden item, remove the object from him and give a firm “no” or “off” command. After several times, your puppy will start to understand what no means. When you’re unable to supervise your puppy, a crate is a good idea.

Also try giving your puppy some dog toys he is allowed to chew.

You may become annoyed when your puppy behaves inappropriately towards family members or guests. When your puppy jumps up, runs wildly, or licks your face, he’s simply trying to communicate his joy. Simply use basic training commands to show your puppy what your expectations are.

Tough love is important when training your dog. Consistently reward your dog for good behavior and punish him for bad behavior. Patience and strong leadership skills are a must. Your puppy must know you are in charge, and be clear of the consequences of various actions.

After a few months of training, your puppy will be a well-behaved member of your household and the hard times will be forgotten!
