Acidophilus Use on Dogs With Yeast Infections

Acidophilus is a type of “good” bacteria that lives in a dog’s intestines. When his system is in balance, this type of bacteria fights “bad” bacteria and keeps microorganisms, including yeast, from multiplying and causing infection.

Yeast Infections

Cause

If a dog’s immune system is weakened, it can’t fight the bacteria and yeast in its body. This results in an overabundance of microbes, which can travel through the bloodstream and cause systemic diseases.

Symptoms

Yeast overgrowth can cause ear infections, skin irritation and digestive problems.

Treatment

Giving a dog plain yogurt, which contains live active cultures of acidophilus, or acidophilus pills will help fight the “bad” bacteria and restore his immune system. Add a tablespoon of plain yogurt or a 10 mg acidophilus capsule to your dog’s meals to help maintain his intestinal balance.

Side Effects

The dog may scratch and have diarrhea as the toxins leave his body.

Warnings

Too much acidophilus can cause a dog’s immune system to become hypersensitive as it fights to find its equilibrium. If symptoms of diarrhea and upset stomach persist longer than two days, contact your veterinarian.
