How Does Clavamox Work?

Amoxicillin is a penicillin-like antibiotic used to kill bacteria. Unfortunately, many strains of bacteria develop resistance to amoxicillin. The addition of clavulanic acid, a beta-lactamase inhibitor, in Clavamox, prevents the bacteria from overtaking the amoxicillin and allowing the antibiotic to kill the infection.

Typical Canine Infections Treated With Clavamox

In hounds, Clavamox ordinarily treats diseases in the skin. Abscesses and wounds infected with Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus spp. and E. coli are examples of common infections.

In addition, veterinarians use Clavamox to treat dental infections, urinary tract infections and respiratory infections in dogs.

Warnings and Administration

Since Clavamox is a penicillin-based medicine, there is a potential for an unfavorably susceptible response. Your veterinarian will not prescribe this medication if your dog has a history of penicillin allergies. Clavamox comes in both pill and liquid form. Administration will depend on the form prescribed. Liquid medication must be kept refrigerated.

Your veterinarian will prescribe this medication based on your dog and the infection it is treating. When treating with Clavamox, as with any antibiotic, continue treating until all medication has been administered.
